এই মসজিদ শব্দটি এসেছে আরবি ভাষা থেকে। মসজিদ শব্দটির অর্থ হচ্ছে সেজদার স্থান। সেজদার মানে হচ্ছে মন থেকে সৃষ্টির সৃষ্টিকর্তাকে শ্রদ্ধার সাথে মাথা নত করা।

এই মসজিদটির নির্মাণ সময় ১৮২৪ – ১৮২৬ সাল।
সুলতান মসজিদ হচ্ছে সিঙ্গাপুরের কেন্দ্রীয় মসজিদ এবং এই মসজিদটির অনেক খ্যাতি আছে এর সৌন্দর্যের জন্য।
তাই, সিঙ্গাপুরের প্রায় সব মুসলিম এই সুলতান মসজিদে নামাজ আদায় করার চেষ্টা করেন বিশেষত জুম্মার দিনে।

এই মসজিদটি নির্মাণ করেন সম্রাট আওরঙ্গজেব ১৬৭১ সালে এবং এই মসজিদটি এশিয়ার ৫ম বৃহত্তম ও পাকিস্তানের ২য় বৃহত্তম মসজিদ।

এটি মালয়েশিয়ার কেদাহ প্রদেশে অবস্থিত।
ইতিহাস থেকে জানা যায় এটি টিংকু মাহমুদ যিনি তাজ উদ্দিন মুকারম শাহের সন্তান বানিয়েছিলেন।

ব্রুনাইয়ের কেন্দ্রীয় মসজিদ হচ্ছে এটি। সুলতান ওমর আলী সাইফুদ্দিন মসজিদটি নির্মাণ হয় ১৯৬৮ সালে।
এশিয়ার মধ্যে এটি সবচেয়ে সুন্দর মসজিদ হিসেবে ধারনা করা হয়।

আর তাই এই মসজিদটির নাম মসজিদে নববী।
এই মসজিদটি হচ্ছে পৃথিবীর মধ্যে দ্বিতীয় সুন্দর ও দ্বিতীয় বড় মসজিদ।
এই অসাধারন সুন্দর মসজিদটি সৌদি আরবের মদিনাতে অবস্থিত এবং
১৮৩৭ সালে এই মসজিদটির গম্বুজে প্রথমবারের মত এর রং করা হয় সবুজ।
